Madras Curry Powder
Madras Curry Powder
Description: Not to be confused with the fiery ‘the hotter the better’ Madras curries that are beloved by after-pub revelers throughout the UK, Tasmanian Spice Traders' Madras Curry Powder is designed to evoke the incredible flavors and complexity of the cuisine of South India and particularly that of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Our Madras Curry Powder is a balanced, bold mix of premium South Indian aromatic spices carefully crafted to impart distinct, complex, rich, earthy flavors with sweet, warming notes and a moderate heat that is present but not overpowering. The perfect blend to add a burst of flavor, incredible depth, unrivaled aroma, a wonderful golden hue, a touch of the exotic, and the authentic flavors of South Indian cuisine to any meal!
Contrary to popular belief, what we know as 'Curry Powders' are not a staple ingredient of Indian cuisine, they are instead, a blend of Indian spices meant to impart the flavors and evoke the essence of traditional, regional, Indian cuisine. Curry Powders (by name) where invented by the British in the 18th Century and are not used in authentic Indian cooking but can be used to make a wide range of delectable Indian inspired dishes. While Madras Curry Powder may not be ‘authentic Indian’, it does use traditional South Indian spices and gets its name from the city of Madras (now Chennai) located in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
Indian style Curry Powders should never contain added salt and Tasmanian Spice Traders follows this convention with our proprietary blend. Allowing you to add salt to your tastes makes this perfect for those requiring a limited salt intake and allowing everyone the flexibility to season their meals to their own preferences.
