Description: Turmeric (TUR-mer-ick) is the vibrant yellow-orange spice that adds its golden hue to Indian, South Asian, Middle Eastern, African, and Latin American dishes. Turmeric has a pleasant, earthy, slightly citrusy aroma and pungent, warm, musky, slightly bitter and peppery flavor and comes from a dried and powdered rhizome (a modified stem that grows horizontally underground) of the Brassicaceae family of plants which includes ginger, galangal, horseradish, wasabi, and lotus. Turmeric has been used in India as a medicinal herb and a culinary spice for more than 4,500 years and today is considered a kitchen staple all around the globe.
